In Polish folk tales, a źródło (spring) was often seen as a place of healing and purity, but also mystery. It was never just water. People said it had a soul, hidden behind rusałki - water spirits of young women who dwelled nearby. The water was used for health and beauty, especially if collected at dawn but there was always caution: forgetting or disrespecting a lonely spring could anger the spirit that lived there.
